The Avignon Festival, also known as the Avignon Festival, is an annual arts festival held during the summer of July in the courtyard of the Palais des Papes and other venues throughout the city. It is the oldest festival in France. The Festival was founded by Jean Vilar, a French actor and director in 1947. The Avignon Festival produces its shows and acts as executive producer for some of them. The Festival provides technical and financial support for the production of its shows and is the employer of these technicians, collaborators and artists. Various companies and artists are invited to present their works at the Festival in the historic and emblematic locations of the Cour d'Honneur and the Palais des Papes.

History of the Festival

The origin: The Avignon Festival was created in 1947, and Jean Vilas presented his first successful play, Murder in the Cathedral by TS Eilot, in the emblematic place that is the Palais des Papes. At the same time and in the same place, another exhibition of contemporary paintings and sculptures was organized by Christian Zervos, art critic and collector of the poet René Char. The very first show of the Avignon Festival, which was held in 1947, presented unknown works from the universal repertoire and modern writings.

  • 1947-1963: For 17 years, the Festival presented the work of a man, a team and a place; Jean Vilar sought to attract a young audience and captivate them in his representation of art through a theatre different from that of Paris at the time.
  • 1964-1979: Jean Vilar invites new directors to this Avignon festival such as Jorge Lavelli, Roger Planchon, Atoine Boursellier. Later, in 1966, he opens Artists' Festivals, where he brings dance with Maurice Bejart and his "Ballet of the 20th Century".
  • 1980-2003: The 1980 Avignon Festival marked a turning point: until then, it was the city hall that administered them, and they received no state subsidies. The managers realized that it had to be more modern and professional to attract the new generation of theater artists. Later, the festival gained administrative freedom and the state joined the festival's board of directors, which made it possible to organize the expansion of the team to meet the need for modern and sophisticated technology and management.
  • 2004-2013: Between these two years, Vincent Baudriller and Hortense Archambault were the co-directors of the Festival. The goal of the Festival was to meet artists and create a large audience that would enjoy their shows. Their meeting or encounter led to a result: they decided to form a team in Avignon and set themselves the goal of creating a festival with the artists.
  • The Avignon Festival is now one of the most popular art festivals in the world. Various artists and directors come to present their creations, artworks and shows. Most tickets for these shows are sold out as soon as they go on sale. Fans and art lovers can go to the venue where their favorite show is taking place. It is advisable to book a seat one hour before the show starts.
